Recap: Privacy Awareness Week NSW 2021

At this year’s Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) NSW 2021, discussions focused on how citizens and NSW public sector agencies can Make Privacy a Priority.

This Privacy Awareness Week NSW 2021, the IPC released various new resources for citizens and public sector agencies:

Citizens

• Top Ten Privacy Tips (new)

NSW public sector agencies

• Data Breach Prevention Checklist (updated) – this checklist includes a list of internal checks where you can measure your current level of privacy preparation, as well as an action list for responding to a data breach
• Privacy by Design fact sheet – this fact sheet explains the key privacy by design principles and how to implement a privacy by design approach in your organisation
• Guide to Privacy Impact Assessments – outlines the benefits of undertaking a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) and the basic steps of conducting a PIA
• Collection of COVID-19 Vaccination Information fact sheet (new) – includes information about how NSW public sector agencies that collect, use, store, or disclose employee health information related to the COVID-19 vaccine must comply with the Health Privacy Principles (HPPs) under the Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002 (HRIP Act).
• Guide – Transition to the cloud: Managing your agency’s privacy risks (new) – this guide has been designed to explain the key privacy risks that come with the use of cloud-based technologies by government, along with the potential impacts. It maps out a framework for addressing these privacy risks across the entire cloud adoption lifecycle. Each section of the framework contains practical advice for different professionals within the agency.

Champion Program

This year a total of 53 agencies have joined the PAW Champion Program to support PAW and Make Privacy a Priority. The IPC would like to thank Champions for helping spread awareness of citizens’ privacy rights and agencies’ responsibilities under NSW privacy legislation.
