Privacy Awareness Week NSW 2021
Privacy Awareness Week NSW 2021
MAKE PRIVACY A PRIORITY
3 - 9 May 2021
About Privacy Awareness Week
Privacy Awareness Week is a global campaign that highlights the importance of privacy and raises awareness for public sector agencies about how to protect the personal information of the people we serve.
This year, Privacy Awareness Week NSW takes place from 3 – 9 May 2021. The campaign involves both public sector agencies and citizens and aims to improve understanding and awareness of NSW privacy legislation, and to raise awareness of a person’s privacy rights and agency obligations.
The theme for this year's campaign is Make Privacy a Priority.
Commissioner Message
We all have a right to privacy and in 2021 I encourage everyone to Make Privacy a Priority.
Agencies can make privacy a priority by implementing a privacy by design approach to digital projects and building good privacy practices into their decision-making, as well as the design and structure of their information systems, business processes, products and services.
Citizens can make privacy a priority by ensuring they review their everyday privacy settings, and informing NSW government agencies and local councils if they think their privacy has been breached.
Advances in technology mean that the protection of people’s personal, sensitive and health information is more important than ever. The community expects that NSW Government agencies will protect their personal information appropriately and good privacy practice by agencies ensures that citizens can have trust in Government services.
Thank you for your support of Privacy Awareness Week NSW and I look forward to celebrating it with you in 2021.
Samantha Gavel
NSW Privacy Commissioner

Privacy Awareness Week 2021: What makes a great PIA?
Date: Thursday 6 May 2021
Time: 10:00 - 11:20am
Format: Register for the Teams Live event here
About: The NSW Privacy and Right to Know Practitioners group together with Privcore are pleased to invite privacy practitioners to their PAW event, What makes a great PIA?
This engaging event captures this year’s PAW NSW theme; Make Privacy a Priority and aims to help privacy officers influence senior decision makers and project owners about the need to conduct privacy impact assessments (PIA) for high risk processing activities. It is based on a report Privcore recently released on “What makes a great PIA?” which privacy officers can use to influence senior decision makers.
Annelies Moens, Managing Director, Privcore, will take practitioners through:
- what a PIA is and what it is NOT
- what to consider when making decisions about whether a PIA is needed
- when and why a PIA should be done for high risk processing activities
- what a PIA should cover
- who should do it
- what to look for in a skilled PIA provider and
- whether once completed, the PIA should be published.
Going beyond compliance, a great PIA helps build customer and citizen trust and confidence in projects. It also reduces risks and costs of high risk processing activities involving personal and health information.
