About Privacy Awareness Week

Privacy Awareness Week is an international campaign that highlights the importance of privacy and raises awareness for public sector agencies about how to protect the personal information of the people we serve.

This year, Privacy Awareness Week NSW takes place from 2 – 8 May 2022. The campaign involves both public sector agencies and citizens and aims to improve understanding and awareness of NSW privacy legislation, and to raise awareness of a person’s privacy rights and agency obligations.

The theme for this year's campaign is Privacy: The foundation of trust – we all have a role to play.

Commissioner Message

Samantha Gavel

All NSW citizens have a right to have their personal information protected. In NSW, these rights are preserved under the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (PPIP Act) and Health Records Information Privacy Act 2002 (HRIP Act).

This year’s theme for Privacy Awareness Week is Privacy: The Foundation of Trust – we all have a role to play.

The public expects that organisations that collect their personal information use it appropriately and keep it secure, and agencies have a key role in safeguarding the personal information of the citizens we serve. Citizens also have a role in making sure their information is protected by keeping their personal information secure, regularly reviewing their privacy settings online and reporting any privacy breaches to the relevant NSW agency.

I look forward to celebrating the right to protect personal information and privacy with you during Privacy Awareness Week NSW 2022.

Samantha Gavel
NSW Privacy Commissioner

Privacy Impact Assessment Questionnaire for Assessing Websites
This Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) questionnaire (the Tool) is a collaboration between the IPC and elevenM, to support NSW public sector agencies in assessing their websites for privacy risks and identifying remediation actions. It has been developed to bring best-practice approaches and methodologies to NSW public sector agencies. This tool does not replace a complete PIA and should only be used to assist in identifying the privacy risks and areas for remedial action. Agencies should consider undertaking their own PIA after using the tool to identify any risks. The IPC acknowledges the materials published by elevenM in the production of this Tool: www.elevenM.com
