NSW Privacy Commissioner champions Data Privacy Day - 28 January 2015 (PDF, 72kb)

 “Your personal information is valuable. It is important to protect it,” the NSW Privacy Commissioner, Dr Elizabeth Coombs said in acknowledgement of international Data Privacy Day (DPD) held today. 

“I regularly hear about data privacy concerns from members of the NSW community, in particular about how their personal data is handled. Data Privacy Day is a reminder to ensure your personal information is protected online by asking questions and reading the fine print before disclosing it,” Dr Elizabeth Coombs said.

The Information and Privacy Commission (IPC) has once again signed on as a champion of Data Privacy Day 2015. The theme this year is ‘respecting privacy, safeguarding data and enabling trust’.

Data Privacy Day is held annually on 28 January and commemorates the signing
of Convention 108. This is the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection by the Council of Europe, on 28 January 1981 and is led by the National Cyber Security Alliance in the USA, a non-profit, public-private partnership dedicated to cyber security education and awareness.

As a DPD Champion, the IPC recognises and supports the principle that organisations, businesses and government all share the responsibility of looking after personal information by respecting privacy, safeguarding data and enabling trust.
