Right to Know Day (28 September) is an international annual event that aims to increase awareness of each individual's right of access to government information and open, transparent governance.

Each year, the IPC marks this occasion with Right to Know Week NSW to raise awareness about accessing government-held information.

The IPC themes for this year's campaign are:

• Transparency and Trust - supporting open government
• You have a right to know - we can help you use it

This means that:

• NSW public agencies have an obligation to provide access to government information and data to the NSW community under the GIPA Act.
• When open government is working well, it increases access to information and data, provides accountability and promotes public participation and importantly, trust in government agency decision-making.

Community event at Central Station Grand Concourse (Country trains)

The NSW community is invited to join the Information Commissioner and IPC staff at Central Station Grand Concourse on Wednesday 26 September 2018 from 7.30am to 11.30am to help celebrate Right to Know Week NSW. Come down and have a chat about understanding your right to access government information and how the IPC can help you. Don't forget to pick up some brochures as well as some fresh fruit and cookies!

Towards Open Government Information (TOGI) e-learning launch and virtual event

This e-learning module is the first to provide comprehensive guidance to NSW Public Sector employees and bring together information management responsibilities in one single training package. The module provides resources and guidance to promote better information management including information access, privacy, state records, digital and cyber security responsibilities.

A select number of NSW public sector agencies have been invited to complete the TOGI module during Right to Know Week NSW. All registered participants will be equipped with a champion pack to help promote the new e-learning resource, and the right to know message, within their workplace.

The TOGI module will be available from Friday 21 September.

Solomon Lecture

Queensland's Office of the Information Commissioner will host Professor Ken Smith, Chief Executive and Dean of the Australian and New Zealand School of Government, to deliver this year's Solomon Lecture as part of Right to Know Week.

Entitled 'Trust and Transparency', Professor Smith will explore how open, transparent government is threatened from a range of ideological extremes.

Watch it streamed live on 24 September 2018 from 11.00am to 12.30pm.
