International Women's Day - 8 March 2015

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated globally every year on March 8.

All around the world, International Women's Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality.

The Australian National Committee for UN Women's theme for International Women’s Day 2015 is “Let's not wait another 20 years”, which highlights the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a historic roadmap signed by 189 governments 20 years ago that sets the agenda for realising women’s rights. 

Each year, the Australian National Committee for UN Women hosts International Women's Day events across Australia. Taking place in the first week of March, these events are attended by more than 8,000 people each year.

In 2015 we commemorate Beijing +20, a global campaign celebrating progress towards gender equality since the landmark Beijing Platform for Action was signed in 1995 by 189 countries. While we have come a long way, we still have a long way to go. Beijing + 20 also highlights what still needs to be done, so we don’t have to wait another 20 years to achieve gender equality.

Around Australia, state Government’s acknowledge this international event with occasions such as launches, forums, grants and awards. In NSW there is an annual breakfast hosted by the UN Women on 6 March will be launched by Minister for Women Pru Goward.
