NSW Taking Action Against Revenge Porn
The NSW Attorney General has given notice in the NSW Parliament to introduce a Bill (the Crimes Amendment (Intimate Images) Bill 2017) to amend the Crimes Act 1900 to create offences relating to non-consensual recording and distribution of intimate images.
“The ‘revenge porn’ Bill recognises the serious impacts that can occur when individuals lose their privacy in this devastating manner” said Dr Elizabeth Coombs, A/NSW Privacy Commissioner.
“Such invasions of privacy can devastate those targeted psychologically, emotionally and socially. The effects can last for a long time and sometimes permanently.
I’m pleased to see this recognition of the importance of privacy and, as I understand the Bill, the increased ability to have the offending material taken down. It’s not just an issue of punishing the perpetrators, but to ensure the images are removed.”
