IPC launches Privacy Awareness Week NSW 2019

Privacy in NSW – the next 20 years: Protection, Consent & Digital Government

The IPC is proud to launch its 9th annual Privacy Awareness Week NSW campaign, which takes place this year from Monday 13 to Sunday 19 May.

Privacy Awareness Week is a global campaign that highlights the importance of privacy and raises awareness for public sector agencies about how to protect the personal information of people we serve.

Each year, the IPC hosts a NSW campaign to raise awareness of privacy rights and obligations for NSW citizens and public sector agencies.

With this year’s theme Privacy in NSW – the next 20 years: Protection, Consent & Digital Government, our focus will be on current and emerging privacy challenges. When the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act (PPIP Act) was developed twenty years ago, privacy challenges were limited to data protection on 3.5 inch floppy disks. In the next 20 years, we can only begin to predict what issues might arise with new technologies. This is why it is crucial to maintain good privacy practices and have the right privacy protections in place. This involves addressing any new challenges and technologies, whilst building trust in digital government.

As part of the campaign the IPC is hosting two key events – one for citizens and one for NSW public sector executives and privacy practitioners.

We are also running our annual PAW Champions program offering each registered Champion agency a collection of resources to assist them to with spreading privacy awareness.

Are you aware of your privacy rights in NSW? PAW is the perfect time to make sure that you are aware. See all of the IPC's fact sheets and information for NSW citizens.
