Privacy in NSW – the next 20 years: Protection, Consent & Digital Government

The IPC is once again proud to support Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) – a global campaign that highlights the importance of privacy and raises awareness for public sector agencies about how to protect the personal information of people we serve.

Each year the IPC hosts Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) NSW, which takes place this year from Monday 13 to Sunday 19 May. Continuing on from the success of last year's campaign, the IPC will be hosting two key events during PAW NSW (see below) – one promoting privacy awareness to NSW citizens and the other creating a forum for NSW public sector executives and privacy practitioners in NSW for open discussion about current and emerging privacy concerns.

This year, our focus will be on current and emerging privacy challenges that arise from our ever increasing digital society. Twenty years ago, privacy challenges were limited to data protection on 3.5 inch floppy disks. In the next 20 years, we can only begin to predict what issues might arise with new technologies. This is why it is crucial to maintain good privacy practices and have the right privacy protections in place. This involves addressing any new challenges and technologies, whilst building trust in digital government.

This year, the IPC is encouraging all NSW public sector agencies, NSW public sector executives and privacy practitioners to spread the message of the importance of privacy by getting involved as a PAW Champion. The campaign is a great opportunity to highlight your agency's commitment to privacy protection principles.

Commissioner's Welcome

Ms Samantha Gavel

Samantha Gavel
A Message from the NSW Privacy Commissioner

Privacy Awareness Week is a great opportunity to get your workplace or community involved in the privacy discussion and to highlight the importance of privacy in creating and maintaining people’s trust.

Our theme for Privacy Awareness Week NSW 2019 is Privacy in NSW – the next 20 years: Consent, Protection & Digital Government, where we look ahead to the challenges that will face us today and into the future. As we are an increasingly digital society, it is crucial to maintain good privacy practices and have the right privacy protection in place to create trust in digital service delivery.

Proactive privacy practice and engaging with the public about privacy rights and obligations, will further develop our citizens' confidence regarding the handling of their personal information.

Thank you for being a 2019 Privacy Awareness Week NSW Champion, and for helping to spread the word about the importance of privacy.

Kind regards,

Samantha Gavel
NSW Privacy Commissioner
